Days after two forensic laboratories gave conflicting reports on the genuineness of a contentious CD, Lokpal drafting committee member Shanti Bhushan asked home minister P Chidambaram for copies of the reports. He said that despite writing to the Delhi Police commissioner and ACP (special cell), he had received no information on these two reports.

The CD purportedly contains a conversation between Shanti Bhushan and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav with the former saying his son Prashant could fix a judge for Rs 4 crore. Terming the CD as fabricated and aimed at maligning their image, the Bhushans had lodged an FIR and filed a defamation suit.

Shanti Bhushan, in his letter to Chidambaram on Friday, said he was surprised that despite knowing him for two decades, the minister had chosen to send the CD for forensic examination. He said that alleged leaks in the media indicated that the report given by Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Delhi had certified that the CD was authentic. Delhi Police sent the CD for further examination to CFSL, Chandigarh which said it was a "cut and paste" job.

Bhushan had sought the two conflicting reports from Delhi Police. He said, "However, no one in Delhi Police is prepared to give me any information... In these circumstances, since you are overseeing the investigation and you have got the CD sent to the two CFSLs in Delhi and Chandigarh, I have to make this request to you to send me copies of the two CFSL reports as well as the statements of Mulayam Singh and Amar Singh, if recorded."

The communication came a day before the third meeting of the Lokpal drafting committee. The committee is expected to discuss whether the judiciary and the Prime Ministers' Office should come under the ambit of the proposed anti-corruption law.
