NEW DELHI: Worried over the rising prices of vegetables, particularly onion, chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday assured that the prices will come down by Rs 3-4 per kg on Thursday. Dikshit said Delhi is not an onion producing state, yet the vegetable is being sold for Rs 60 per kg at Safal outlets, whereas across the country the average price is Rs 83 per kg.

"Delhi has no control over the prices of onion. But we are controlling the prices as much as we can and our teams inspected the mandis. No hoarding is taking place in Delhi, unlike Madhya Pradesh," she said.

Dikshit said the prices fell by Rs 2 on Wednesday afternoon, from Rs 37.5-60 per kg to Rs 35-58 per kg. Comparing the price rise in 1998 that resulted in BJP losing the assembly elections, Dikshit said the Rs 100 mark of 1998 would now be equal to Rs 400, in purchasing power terms.

Nonetheless, the chief minister would meet agriculture minister Sharad Pawar on Thursday.

Dikshit said onion is selling for Rs 80 per kg in Kanpur, Rs 75 in Lucknow, Rs 65 in Kolkata, Rs 60 in Mumbai, Rs 65 in Gwalior, Rs 83 in Agartala, Rs 80 in Shimla, Bhagalpur and Aizawl, Rs 70 in Varanasi and Thiruvananthapuram, and Rs 60 in Jaipur. To lessen the impact of soaring onion prices, the Delhi government had last month started selling the vegetable at reasonable rates through 50 mobile vans.

"I beg people, including the opposition, not to politicize the issue," Dikshit said, "as some are using this issue before the Delhi elections. Rising prices of onion is a matter of concern for everyone. The entire requirement of about 1,000 tonnes per day is met from different onion producing states."
