The office bearers of the Yavatmal Zilla Shetkari Sangharsh Samiti have flayed the state and Central governments for their anti-farmer policies and programmes. The coalition of farmers has threatened a mass agitation across the state if their long pending demands are not met immediately.

General secretary Ashok Bhutada said at a press conference on Monday that the governments at the state and Centre have failed to curb farmers' suicide, as their policies are not in the interest of the toiling masses.

"We cultivate our farms to feed 110 crore people of this vast agriculture country. Every day, production cost is soaring while the minimum support price for select crops declared by the government doesn't rise at all," Bhutada said. He added that the farmers are born in debt, live in debt and finally end their worldly sojourn in debt.

Citing the step motherly treatment and exploitation of farmers, Bhutada said that insurance companies sanction compensation to vehicle owners and other policy holders as per damages caused to them in the accident. Even death is compensated after taking into consideration annual income of the deceased.

However, the crop insurance schemes launched with great fanfare during the regime of AB Vajpayee at the Centre and the Shiv Sena- BJP alliance in the state have only looted farmers of money, he said. Bhutada said 6% of every loan is deducted at the source, without the consent or knowledge of the poor farmers for the insurance premium. However, when farmers approach insurance companies for compensation against crop failure, the companies give various lame excuses to either delay the payment or deny it outright, he alleged.

Explaining the manner in which the farmers have to face losses, Bhutada said production cost of cotton at the moment is Rs 34,550 per acre. However, banks grant loan of Rs 8,800 per acre, for which needy farmers are forced to mortgage land costing Rs 2 lakh or more per acre.

Dr Mukundrao Kalaspurkar, leading farm activist of the district, said, "The government is keen to waive loan of industrial houses and lavishly pay employees. However, the unorganised sector of farmers and farm labourers is neglected continuously."
