West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told the people of the Maoist-hit areas of Purulia district on Friday that “you shall get whatever you ask for, provided you don't support the Maoists.”

“You shall have colleges, schools, hospitals, stadia, sports academies and even a medical college. Whatever you ask for, we shall provide it. But you must make only one promise — you will not support the Maoists,” she said, addressing a public rally at Balarampur.

‘Politics of terror'

Pleading with the people not to give in to “this politics of terror” the Maoists were practising, Ms. Banerjee urged the youth to organise themselves into committees that could mount vigil at night.

Though Ms. Banerjee did not say that her government resumed the joint security operations to flush out the Maoists from the Jangal Mahal region in Purulia, Bankura and Paschim Medinipur districts, she said she had given the militants four months, “so that good sense may prevail.”

Describing the militants as “cowards” who committed murders in the shadows of the night, she said some of these “comrades” who earlier lived in penury now hoarded crores of rupees.

Pulling up beside her, the frail and ageing mother of Jitu Singh Sardar, a supporter of her Trinamool Congress who was killed by suspected Maoists, Ms. Banerjee asked: “Does she look like a class enemy to you?” “Today, the poor have become your class enemy and hoarding a lot of money is your objective,” she said, referring to the Maoists. “Anyone indulging in the politics of killings is my enemy.”

The Chief Minister said the State government would take care of the family members of anyone who was killed while resisting the Maoists. She said she would welcome those Maoists who “realised their mistake” and willing to return to the mainstream.

Though the deadlines set by Ms. Banerjee and month-long ceasefire offers from the Maoists have all expired, she told them: “There is still time, return to the mainstream.”

Earlier in the day, Ms. Banerjee held a meeting with officials and Ministers to assess the progress of government schemes in Purulia. Development in the district was “a challenge” she had taken up, but the Maoists were hindering her initiatives, she said.

She announced the setting up of 326 upper primary schools and 53 secondary schools, 17 new ration outlets and eight mobile medical camps, and the distribution of more than 11,000 cycles to school students.

The Chief Minister said she would develop tourism industry in the Ayodhya Hills, now the hotbed of Maoist activities. The district would have 20 new factories and an airport.
