Employment generation under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) increased by a handsome 28.8 per cent to 277.5 million person days in April 2023. This growth was higher than the 5.6 per cent increase recorded in the previous month. Employment generated under MGNREGS increased substantially by close to 62.1 million person days in April, compared to 11.4 million person days that were generated in March. Furthermore, this increase in employment in April 2023 was mainly concentrated in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh.

In these three states put together, over 46 million person days were added in April under MGNREGS. Andhra Pradesh added around 19.7 million person days, Telangana added 13.6 million person days and Uttar Pradesh added 12.8 million person days of employment in the month. Employment increase in these states accounted for over 74 per cent of the all-India MGNREGS employment rise in April 2023.

In April 2023, Andhra Pradesh contributed 14.2 per cent share of the total MGNREGS employment in India, which is the highest among all states. Telangana and Uttar Pradesh accounted for 8.1 per cent and 9.3 per cent of the share respectively.

States like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Bihar generally have large shares in employment under the MGNREGS. In April, Tamil Nadu accounted for 12.7 per cent of the total employment under the scheme, which is second highest after Andhra Pradesh. Rajasthan accounted for 10.2 per cent share. This is followed by Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Telangana each comprising between 8-9 per cent share of the total MGNREGS employment in April. Among these states, while Rajasthan added a significant number of person days, Tamil Nadu recorded a fall in employment generation under MGNREGS.
