Anantapur: Lack of skilled manpower and approved operators with tool kits and computer systems has badly hit the Aadhaar enrolment drive in the district.

Though the administration had around 350 kits pertaining to the enrolment process, the district administration was unable to set up new centres to complete the process in the scheduled period.

Long queues were witnessed ever since the enrolment drive started at 22 centres in the district. Generally, a family would take at least 15 minutes to complete the enrolment process for the unique number. The entire process was traumatic for the aged, the handicapped and pregnant and lactating women.

Similarly, many of them were visiting the centres a second time for enrolment as they had failed to get Aadhaar cards via post even though they applied last year. “My neighbour got Aadhaar cards by post four months ago. But I have not received them so far and came to get enroll a second time,” a person from Ramnagar said. A retired employee R.V. Badinath from First Road here said there no information was available at the e-seva centres.

“I neither got Aadhaar by post nor could I download the unique numbers of our family members,” he said.

Officials have to face pressure from the people in the district to set up new enrolment centres. In fact, of the 22 centres launched, only 18 are functioning so far. “If an operator becomes ill, the particular centre would be closed for the day,” an official said.

On skilled individuals and approved operators can run the centre by using the kit as the system runs only entering the thumb impression. Though, a large number of data entry operators were available with various departments, theyare not eligible to operate the kits. “We can run even more than 100 centres to complete process at the earliest, but the shortage of skilled operators is a major problem,” a district official said. Similarly, district authorities have reportedly failed to make the people aware that there was no need to visit enrolment centres a second time.  “The issuing of UID would get delayed if a person enrolls twice,” the sources said.
