Planning to call over friends and relatives this Uttarayan for the undhiyu treat? Then, watch out, for, your budget may go haywire if you have not factored in the price rise.

Onion prices aren't the only one making Amdavadis cry. Vegetable prices in general seem to make the Amdavadi very emotional as he watches his wallet being ripped apart.

The soaring vegetable prices have sent household budgets haywire.

Undhiyu, one of the popular delicacies made during Uttarayan, may bear the brunt of the price rise. Undhiyu is a mixture of various vegetables but the price rise means home-makers are either planning to reduce the quantity or up the budget for the same.

A comparison of vegetable prices will show why undhiyu will be a costly dish this Uttarayan. According to the Ahmedabad Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) members, vegetables like surti papadi, cabbage, cauliflower, garlic, brinjal have seen a spurt of more than 200% in prices. Vegetables like valod and chauli have seen price rise of 100%.

The only respite is for vegetables like green peas, potatoes and beetroot which have seen a drop in prices. But, the increase in prices of almost all other vegetables negates this.

A vegetable vendor in Jodhpur said that customers should expect at least 10% rise in prices, on an average, if they plan to make undhiyu at home.

Experts said that the unseasonal rains that have hit Gujarat and other parts of India have affected the vegetable crop. They said that the rains spoiled a portion of the produce. What was left has also been affected which means the produce cannot be stored for long.

Nilesh Patel, a wholesale trader at Jamalpur said, "The rains and ongoing wedding season are responsible for the price rise."
Traders explained that on one hand the quantity of produce reaching the market is less than the usual average while on the other there is a rise in demand due to the marriage season.

"This has led to a mismatch in demand and supply adding to the price rise," they said.

The usual stock of vegetable from the state and other parts of India is expected to arrive from around January 15. Thus, it is unlikely that prices may cool down before Uttarayan.

The manager of a well known food joint in Shivranjani said, "With the prices of vegetables heading north, we are expecting an increase of at least Rs30 per kg in undhiyu prices. Last year a kg of undhiyu cost Rs130."

Echoing similar sentiments Manjula Shah said, "My kids relish Undhiyu and given the rise in vegetable prices, I have no option but to stretch my budget." Officials of APMC said that prices could cool down a bit once the marriage season gets over.
