State Bank to jack up rural lending by 25% by Anita Bhoir

State Bank of India, the country’s largest bank, plans to scale up its rural book in keeping with its objective to increase financial inclusion.

The bank plans to increase its rural lending book by 25% and its deposit base by about 28%,’’ said Jayanta K Sinha chief general manager, rural business, SBI. The bank is also in the process of teaming up with corporates, who would be Business Correspondents(BC). “In keeping with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) letter we have drafted a financial inclusion plan, which has been approved by the board,” Sinha said.

At the end of March 2010 the bank had lent around Rs1,43,358 crore in rural centres and it plans to increase its loan book by Rs36,475 crore by the end of March 2011. The bank’s deposit base in rural areas at the end of March 2010 stood at Rs2,54,168 crore and it plans to add about Rs 73,286 crore to its deposit base.

“We would approach the rural markets through our branch network, use technology and also business correspondent to grow our business,’’ added Sinha. ``We will add around 1,500 branches in rural and semi urban areas in the next three years. At present, the bank has 12,647 business correspondents we will add another 12,000 BCs by the end of March 2011,’’ added Sinha. The bank has about 75 lakh no frills account of which 44 lakh accounts have been sourced by BCs.

Currently, the BCs market savings deposits, overdraft and remittances products for SBI, however going forward, the bank would market micro insurance, pension and kisan credit card through this channel. SBI operates through 13,000 branches of which 4,856 branches are in rural centers and 3,801 branches are in semi urban areas. The bank has installed 141 bio metric ATMs and some specialised ATMs which operate on solar power and tough weather condition in select rural centres.
