‘Krishi Karman' award to be presented toMinister of Agriculture in Delhi

Guntur: Andhra Pradesh may have been known previously as the ‘rice bowl' of the country, but the State is on course to becoming the ‘cereal bowl' of India.

The State recorded the highest production of coarse cereals for the year 2012-2013 over the five preceding years and in recognition of this achievement, the Government of India has announced ‘Krishi Karman' award to the Department of Agriculture in the individual crop category.

Presentation on Feb. 10

President of India Pranab Mukherjee will present the award to Minister for Agriculture Kanna Lakshminarayana in New Delhi on February 10.

The award includes a cash prize of Rs.1 crore and a citation.

"The award is a tribute to the resilience of farmers and the ingenuity of millet scientists of the State. The farmers had to overcome some tough conditions, including uncertainty in release of water during rabi and unseasonal rains. We will encourage more farmers to opt for cultivation of millets," Mr. Lakshminarayana said.

Encouraging yields

In 2012-13, the production of major millets such as jowar and bajra touched 5,18,000 tonnes with an yield of 1,805 kg per hectare. Jowar is being cultivated in 3.05 lakh hectares in the State. In 2011-12, jowar production touched 4,29,000 lakh tonnes with an yield of 1,794 kg per hectare.

In the case of minor millets such as ragi, korra and fama, 2012-13 could be said to be a watershed year in terms of production and yield. The cultivable area was 38,000 hectares with a production of 36,000 tonnes, while the yield reached a record 947 kg per hectare.

Senior millet scientist N.J.R.K Sharma, who recently made a presentation at New Delhi, told The Hindu on Monday that farmers have been encouraged to opt for coarse grain production to tide over water scarcity conditions.

Input subsidy

The Government of India scheme -- Initiative for Nutritional Security through Intensive Millet Promotion (INSIMP) -- had provided free input subsidy of Rs.3,000 per hectare to farmers to promote production of jowar and processing units were given 100 per cent subsidy to encourage value added products.

In Guntur, Joint Director of Agriculture Suneetha said an innovative technology developed by scientists of ‘zero tillage farming' had proved to be beneficial in reducing the cost of cultivation. The cultivable area of jowar has increased from 1,300 hectares to 33,000 hectares due to various incentives and average production in the district touched seven tonnes per hectare, much more than the national average.
