State's Forest Department's status report on 17,000 trees to be cut -Pankaj Jain

Noida: The Delhi High Court has put a stay till July 4 to not to cut any more trees in the Capital, putting on hold a controversial mega-project in the city to make way for government officers' houses and a commercial complex.

India Today has the exclusive statistics of a status report prepared by the Forest Department officials of the Delhi Government on 17,000 trees to be cut for the NBCC project. The report mentions areas of south Delhi where trees have been allowed or have not been allowed to be cut.

According to the status report, the areas where tree cutting was permitted are as follows:

1. In Naroji Nagar, 1,454 trees were allowed to be cut but only 1,302 trees were cut. Notification of permission was issued on November 15, 2017.

2. A total of 2,294 trees were allowed to be cut in Netaji Nagar. According to the given permission, in the first phase, 856 trees were to be cut but only 202 trees were cut. Notice of permission was issued on April 23, 2018.

3. In Kidwai Nagar, notification of tree cutting permission was issued in 2014. According to the status report, 1,123 trees have been cut down after permission.

According to the status report, the area where tree cutting was not allowed are as follows:

1. Mohammedpur had the proposal to cut 447 trees but the Minister of Environment and Forest had returned the file asking to reduce the number of trees to be cut down. According to the status report, Mohammedpur has not been allowed to cut trees yet. There was no information on illegal tree cutting.

2. In Tyagraj Nagar, the file has been sent to the higher authority for the proposed cutting of 100 trees. Meanwhile, the trees have not been allowed to be axed.

3. The file proposing to cut 11,000 trees in Sarojini Nagar has been returned citing the high number of trees. Later, a proposal to cut 606 trees was sent, but this file was also returned.

4. Apart from this, no proposal has been sent to cut trees in areas such as Kasturba Nagar and Srinivaspuri.

The status report suggests that there was a proposal to cut approximately 17,000 trees. So far, a total of 4,871 trees have been allowed to be cut, of which only 2,627 trees have been chopped down. However, important information related to the status report is yet to come out. Meanwhile, the National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) can answer questions arising from the media on Monday.
