Applicants seeking admission to entry-level classes in private schools under the 25 per cent reservation of Right to Education (RTE) Act 2009 can apply in their neighbouring schools by January 20.

As per the guidelines framed by UT Administration, in compliance with the provisions of RTE Act, an applicant either from Economically Weaker Section (EWS) or disadvantaged groups of society, can apply in a school situated within a radius of 1 km from his residence.

In view of the schools reiterating shortage in number of takers for the reserved seats, the administration has now directed the schools to allow applicants from distant locations as well.

DPI (Schools) Sandeep Hans told Newsline, “The schools have long been stating that despite advertising about the admissions, they have not been able to find ample number of eligible candidates for reserved category. We have now asked them to accept applications from anyone who lives in the city.”

While the registration form for these candidates remains the same as general category in all the private schools, an additional document will have to be attached during submission.

An EWS applicant will have to provide proof of family’s total annual income duly attested by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) along with the form. As per RTE Act, the income should not exceed Rs 1.5 lakh.

Meanwhile, the candidates belonging to disadvantaged groups need to produce a document which states that the candidate’s name falls in the list of those approved to be belonging to under-privildged section of society by UT social welfare department. Each of the 73 private aided/unaided schools in the city will be conducting draw of lots after January 20 for selecting the candidates for the 25 per cent reserved seats.
