Guwahati: Arunachal Pradesh has the highest number of liver cancer patients in the country and the second highest stomach cancer cases in the world after China, a nationwide cancer-tracking programme conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research has found.

The latest report on the country's cancer scene, based on data available with the council's population-based cancer registries (PBCR), also shows that Aizawl in Mizoram has the highest incidence of cancer in men, while Papum Pare in Arunachal accounts for the maximum cases among women.

"While the northeastern states traditionally reported high incidence of cancer compared to the rest of the country, the latest data reveals that the cancer burden in the Northeast is among the highest in the world," Amal Chandra Kataki, a member of the steering committee of the national cancer registry programme of ICMR, told The Telegraph today. Kataki, who also heads the B. Borooah Cancer Institute, Guwahati, the lone full-fledged cancer-care institute in the region, said the data on Arunachal was a new development. He said earlier it was difficult to get cancer figures from the state but the setting up of two PBCRs there about three to four years back had helped the ICMR to collect cancer-related data.

"One of the causes for the highest prevalence of liver cancer in Arunanchal Pradesh might be a lack of awareness about precautions that need to be taken to prevent hepatitis-B infection. It has been found that a large number of people get infected with hepatitis-B due to ignorance which finally causes liver cancer," Kataki said.

Mari Basar, the only cancer surgeon in Arunachal Pradesh, said around 20 per cent of those suffering from hepatitis were likely to develop liver cancer in later stages. He said sharing of infected needles among drug users could cause hepatitis.

Basar said blood transfusion without proper testing could also be a factor in the high number of hepatitis patients, who eventually develop liver cancer. He said increased consumption of alcohol has also led to increased liver cancer cases.

A former director of the state health department, Karthik Nishing, said smoked meat and fermented food is consumed in high quantities in various parts of Arunachal Pradesh by almost all the 26 major communities and this contributes to high instances of stomach cancer.

Basar also pointed to regular consumption of smoked dried meat as a reason for high stomach cancer cases. He said places where people have similar food habits, like China, Japan and Taiwan, also suffer from high incidences of stomach cancer.

Kataki said the enormity of the tobacco problem in the Northeast is reflected in data available with 29 cancer registries across the country.

The ICMR report says Assam's Kamrup (metro) district has recorded the fourth highest incidence of cancer in the country in men and the third highest in women. Cancer of hypopharynx, mouth and tongue among women in the district are the first, third and fourth highest in the country while cancer of hypopharynx in men is the second highest in the country. The district records the highest instance of gall bladder cancer in both men and women in the country and the third highest instance of cancer of oesophagus among women in the country. Cancer of the prostate is second highest and ovarian cancer the third highest in the country.

Kataki said considering the alarming scene in the region, the need of the hour is to develop the B. Borooah Cancer Institute into a centre of excellence for cancer treatment, education and research.
