NAMAKKAL: Childline 1098 will conduct a survey on child marriages among school-going girls in the district, as a sample study conducted in a renowned government higher secondary school here showed alarming figures of students falling victims of child marriage, said its director S.L. Sathiya Nesan.

“More than 20 girls studying in the government higher secondary school in Namakkal are married – of which two of them are pregnant,” he told The Hindu .

This came to light when members from Childline went to the school about a week ago to confirm the age of a 15-year-old student with the school authorities in order to stop her marriage.

The students said some of them were already married. A team of Childline staff conducted a study among 1,130 girls studying in Standard X, Plus-One, and Plus-Two in the school, with the help of teachers. “We could confirm that 20 girls were married. The marriage of five girls could not be confirmed because their teachers were unavailable. Two girls were 15-years-old, six were 16 and another six were 17. Five girls who are now 18-years-old and another girl who is 19-years-old got married when they were minors. Three girls dropped out of school after they got married a few months ago,” said S. Mayilambigai who conducted the study. An official in the Education Department said that they conducted a survey in government schools in the district to check the prevalence of child marriages with the help of head masters. Only two girls were identified but both of them discontinued education after their early marriage. Another survey will be conducted in June necessary action will be initiated, the official said.
