One of the closest electoral battles for Bihar, where PM Narendra Modi and CM Nitish Kumar are playing out their old rivalry, begins with the first phase of polling in 49 of a total 243 seats on Monday.

Strategies by alliances to bite off each other’s caste pie and focus on issues such as beef, detached from ground realities, have arguably made Mandate 2015 the toughest ever with BJP desperate to wrest Bihar, Kumar fighting for survival and ally Lalu Prasad seeking political rehabilitation.
Opinion Polls

Opinion polls by at least eight agencies and TV channels have pointed to a hung assembly with the two major alliances going neck-and-neck. While four of these have given the BJP-led NDA a slight advantage, two have made it a clear winner. One – CNN-IBN Axis – has tilted the scale in favour of the Grand Alliance.

Incidentally, the surveys done by these and other agencies in August and September favoured NDA while those in October – closer to the polls – upped the alliance’s chances. These predictions, many feel, could polarise voters on caste and religious lines in order to avoid a repeat of 2005 when elections were conducted twice after a split verdict in February.

“Surveys are sponsored, so no point losing sleep over them. The BJP, having imported alien issues such as the beef lynching, should be more worried about the outcome,” Nitish Kumar said.

“These (surveys) are too early. Why the rush?” said the party’s Rajya Sabha member Ali Anwar.

That the stakes in the “election of the year” are high has been underscored by personal attacks to deepen the social divisions.

The high-pitch electoral battle has seen key players hurling abuses at one another with Narendra Modi and Nitish Kumar carrying on their ego war that led to JD(U)’s divorce from BJP before the Lok Sabha polls last year.
