The police at Sekmai in Manipur have rescued 10 tribal children, including three girls, from a child trafficker on Wednesday. They were being taken to Chennai as a part of a racket.

The children, hailing from the interior villages of Churachandpur district, can speak only their dialects. They were being taken in an inter-State bus by a trafficker identified as James Khup (27) of New Lamka, Churachandpur.

Following numerous instances of child trafficking, the Social Welfare Department and other NGOs had sounded the alert to all police stations.

The police became suspicious when they saw the children huddled in the back of the bus.

Preliminary inquiry revealed that Khup was an agent for some people in Chennai. The children were being taken on the assurance that they would be given education and employment later.

Khup was remanded to police custody, and the government is making arrangements to hand over the children to their parents.
