INDORE:
To protest against the increase in height of Omkareshwar dam, tribals farmers of Gogalgoan of Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh are once again on 'Jal Satyagraha' in their filed which have been flooded due to increase in water level of dam.

They are in knee deep water carrying placards that called for government to give them land or sufficient compensation. In the year 2012 farmers had organised similar 'Jal Satyagraha', which lasted for 17 days and got international attention.

Opposing the increase of dam height to 91 metre, due to which fields are getting submerged, protesting farmers said it is their final struggle.

Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader Chittraroopa Palit, who is at Gogalgaon, said around 500 farmers who own less than five acres of land, were the worst hit by the increase in the dam height. "Most of these farmers had been given compensation at the rare of Rs 2 lakh per acre in 2006. But, they had returned the money on the assurance by the Grievances Redressal Authority (GRA) that they would be given land if they returned the compensation money," said Palit.

She alleged that land given by the authorities to the farmers is either non-productive or on the side of nullah and in many cases, it has been encroached. "So it is not possible for famers to cultivate these fields. Now farmers have no money, no land and the land they own is getting submerged," said Palit.

Sadashiv Rajaram, one of the protesting farmer said, compensation given to them was not enough and now they want land of their choice. "The government does not want to see our woes. If the government officials do not visit the place, how will they understand our plight. Our very existence depends upon our farms. We live with our farms and we will die with our farms," said Rajaram. Five acres of his total nine-acre land is submerged in water.

"All that we are seeking is compensation as per laws," said Suku Bai adding she has three children and all of them are illiterate and depend on farming. Where will they go if our land is submerged?

Another protester, Sukhlabai is facing threat of submergence of every inch of her land. "The government fooled us. For a land worth in lakhs of rupees, it offered us a paltry sum," she said.

Meanwhile, Khandwa district collector MK Agrawal termed the protest as unjustified. "Compensation has already been paid. Water is not going to enter their houses, only fields will be submerged," he said.

Refusing the allegation of giving unproductive and encroached land to framers in compensation, Agrawal said increase water level in dam will help irrigate 60,000 hectares of land through 64 km network of canals, which is laying unused.
