Activists on Wednesday welcomed the government's decision to review the cases against members of the alleged Maoist-backed Chasi Muliya Adivasi Sangha (CMAS) outfit and take steps for their early release from prison.

The tribal outfit has forcibly occupied over 3,000 acres of non-tribal land in Koraput's Narayanpatna block between 2009 and 2010. On November 20, 2009, CMAS activists had attacked the Narayanpatna police station. Two activists were killed in subsequent police firing. Since then, CMAS president Nachika Linga's name figures in the police's most wanted list. At present, around 150 CMAS activists, including its advisor Gananath Patro and leader Tapan Mishra, are lodged in Koraput jail.

Release of jailed CMAS activists and a solution to the land problem in Narayanpatna was one of the conditions laid by the Maoists for the safe release of Malkangiri collector R Vineel Krishna and junior engineer Pabitra Mohan Majhi, who were kidnapped on February 16. On Tuesday, the state government assured the Maoist-appointed interlocutors to start the necessary process to release the jailed activists in 15 days.

"We welcome the government's decision on CMAS activists. Tribals fighting for their land rights were subjected to police excesses in Narayanpatna. Innocent tribals languishing in jails on false charges will be able to walk to freedom now," said Prafulla Samantaray, the president of Lok Sakthi Abhijan, which is supporting CMAS.

Samantaray suggested the setting up of a special commission for implementation of the Land Act. "Right to land was a long-standing demand of the tribals of Narayanpatna but the state government deliberately overlooked this. Now, the government has agreed to solve the land dispute and therefore it should form a special land commission for speedy transfer of tribal land to the original owners," he said.

Sources said CMAS is contemplating to organize a massive rally in Narayanpatna on Friday in connection with the government's decision. The rally is likely to be attended by leaders from across the state who has been supportive to the CMAS in their fight for land right.

Official sources said the district administration has already taken steps to release CMAS activists, who were arrested on less serious charges.
