KORAPUT: Tribals in Koraput's Narayanpatna continue to desert Maoist-backed Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh (CMAS) expressing their desire to join the mainstream. In the latest incident, at least 63 tribals approached SP ( Koraput) Awinash Kumar on Saturday and vowed not to return to the sangh. Instead they said they would cooperate with the administration in its developmental activities.

While as many as 12 tribals had deserted the sangh on January 11, over three dozen tribals had left the sangh on the next day alleging that they were neglected both by the CMAS and Maoists.

"We had joined the CMAS as we were assured of financial and logistical support. But we got nothing by joining the sangh. While hundreds of sangh activists have been jailed, their families are languishing in villages without any help from the Maoists or the sangh," said one of the tribals.

Out of the total tribals, who have deserted the CMAS recently, at least 71 belong to Bhaliaput, which is the village of CMAS supremo Nachika Linga and the nerve centre of sangh activities.

At present, Linga is on the run fearing arrest for his alleged involvement in around 30 offensives, including murder and attacking Narayanpatna police station in 2009.
