DINDIGUL: Tribals from different villages on the Kodaikanal hill on Monday organised a demonstration here on Monday to flay a move to displace them from their land by Forest Department officials. They appealed to the government to implement the Forest Rights Act and redraw tribal areas.

They alleged that forest officials prevented tribal people from collecting forest produces such as honey and firewood for their survival and foisted cases against them in order to evict them from places where they have been living for generations. The protesters said that they were not even allowed to take up micro farming activities.

Following threats and arrests on false charges, many have fled and found asylum in private estates, they alleged.

They demanded immediate implementation of Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forests Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act and Rules.

The government must take stringent action against officials who foisted cases with an aim of evicting tribal people residing in or near forest areas.

The State government should identify and draw boundaries of tribal areas so that such lands could be earmarked under the 5th schedule, they said. Moreover, revenue officials had classified a group of tribals in Kodaikanal as scheduled caste. These tribal people had been living in the forest for more than three generations.

Several speakers deplored that the importance given to protection of wild animals was not being given to tribal communities. Group houses constructed on the hills were in a dilapidated condition. Most of the drinking water pumps remain damaged.

Other demands

Construction of group houses, ration cards and drinking water and health facilities at villages on upper hills were their other demands.
