BHUBANESWAR: Villagers of Pathpani, where Maoists killed a Sikhya Sahayak three days ago, have appealed to chief minister Naveen Patnaik, Nuapada SP and collector to relocate them at some other village.

Maoists had killed Dunguripali primary school teacher Chaitanya Majhi (32), accusing him of being a police informer, and thrown his body in Pathpani forest. After the incident about 250 villagers deserted the village fearing more attacks by Maoists. They are now staying in their relatives' homes in three neighbouring villages of Kutpali, Ghabra and Kandhpada. They are determined not to return to the village again, sources said.

"We fear for our lives as the village periphery area has become a Maoist den and we don't have faith in the security forces. We have urged the chief minister and the local administration to shift us to some other location, away from Maoist influence so that we can live without fear," said Hiradhar Majhi, a villager. He said they should be treated as displaced persons and rehabilitated accordingly.

The slain teacher's father Yudhisthir Majhi also voiced concern over the increasing Maoist activities in the area. He said the villagers are tolerating the presence of Maoists in the area out of fear. "If we continue to stay here, we have no choice but to act as Maoist supporters. So we unanimously decided to stay elsewhere although it will be very taxing for us in terms of earning livelihood," said Majhi.

According to sources, most of the villagers depended on forest produce for their livelihood. It is a small village located in a hilly area, which adds to the advantage of the ultras.

DIG (South-western range) S Dev Dutt Singh said the Maoists will be driven out from the area shortly as security forces have moved into the forest to flush them out. "After the Maoists are driven out, villagers will return. We will also take measures for confidence building," said Singh.
