PALANI: Tribals, living in Kattrazhaikaradu on declivity of lower Palni Hill of Balasamudram Town Panchayat, received benefits ranging from community certificate to land pattas and school admission to old age pension on Monday, thanks to quick action taken by the district administration.

From now on, tribals and their wards need not toil in private farms as they have become land owners. Their children, once child labourers, can go to school. The aged ones will receive pension. They have community certificate and ration card, basic requirements to avail themselves of benefits of welfare schemes.

Besides these, they have received PDS goods, including rice and grocery items, bed sheets, clothes and dhotis, medical assistance and uniform, books and school bags. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department has donated two cows with calves from its ‘Gaushaala' for their sustainable income generation. Two tribals have become members of a milk producers' cooperative society.

These people got all these benefits on single day, and that too at their doorsteps. Over 60 officials had worked for five days to get the job done. The district administration has several welfare plans in the pipeline for the uplift of tribals.

Handing over certificates and welfare aid worth Rs.6.63 lakh to them at Kattrazhaikaradu on Monday, Collector M. Vallalar said that agri-engineers would reclaim lands offered to tribals, sink bore wells, plant fruit tree saplings and impart farm training. Drinking water and toilet facilities would also be provided. Tribal women would be roped into the SHG movement. A survey was being conducted in 136 tribal habitations in the district to draw area-specific action plans. Based on the survey, tribals in other habitations would enjoy similar benefits, he added. Superintendent of Police M.S. Muthusamy said that such measures would prevent Naxals from gaining foothold in tribal areas. District Rural Development Agency Project Officer K. Arunmani said a new building was constructed for anganwadi at Puliamarthushed, to accommodate tribal children. Of the 21 tribal children, eight were admitted to a bridge school and seven in regular schools and the rest in anganwadis. “With no community certificate, our children became child labourers,” said Selvi, a tribal woman. “We have been languishing on rocks with no shelter for several years,” she added.
