SURAT: For the tribals living in interior villages of Dang, Tapi and Surat districts, driving a motorcycle has become a costly affair.

While their counterparts in other areas, who have access to petrol pumps, are paying Rs 70.68 per litre, they have to shell out Rs 90 per litre for the fuel. With no petrol pumps in the interior villages, they are dependent on grocery stores selling petrol for Rs 45 for half-a-litre.

A resident of Bheskarti village in Vyara taluka Ajay Vasava said, "There is not a single petrol pump in the radius of 35 kilometres (km) of our village. We have to depend on the grocery stores in the village to meet our daily requirement of fuel. Since the grocery store owners fetch petrol from far away places, they charge an extra Rs 20 per litre."

He said that his village has a population of around 1,500 people owning around 90 motorcycles. Most of the motorcycle owners visit Vyara town to fill their tanks during the weekends, but it is a costly affair as they have to travel around 80 km to and fro. A grocery store owner in Pipalwada village Sunya Tadvi said, "In our village water is not a problem, but getting petrol is a major cause of worry. Very few villagers have got their own tractors and we are one among them. However, my husband visits Ahwa, some 45 km away, on his tractor and gets around 100 litres of petrol in the air-tight container. The retail price is Rs 45 for half-a-litre and this way we earn around Rs 2,000."

Same is the story in the interior villages of Dang. A grocery store owner in Nandapeda village Mansinh Mahla said, "The villagers have taken up the issue of petrol pumps in the past with the district administration and the government. But nothing has been done as yet. Though we are earning money from selling petrol, we want that the petrol pumps should be set up within five km radius of villages."
