A 48-hour bandh began in the Visakha Agency with hundreds of tribals with the support of all political parties enforcing it to protest the proposed bauxite mining in the area.

The tribals themselves checked all vehicles in a bid to prevent the central expert committee from going ahead and conducting its survey. The four-man committee appointed by the Union ministry of environment and forests was scheduled to undertake a two-day visit to the locations believed to have bauxite reserves from Tuesday. But the anti-bauxite mining agitators gathered in huge numbers at various places and enforced a bandh.

On Tuesday, the agitators blocked the roads by felling trees at Sivalingapuram near S Kota and Dumbriguda near Araku disrupting vehicular movement. Thousands of tourists faced severe problems as no vehicle was available to return.

Hundreds of youths of Telangana region, who came here by train with no information about the bandh, were the worst sufferers. Their lunch packs and baggages were in the buses that were stranded at Sivalingapuram.

Even at Jerrela, which is rich with bauxite reserves, about 30 villagers waited with sticks and traditional weapons, bows and arrows, to block the committee members' arrival. Several special police parties were deployed at different places in the Agency in view of the bandh. APSRTC and private operators suspended all bus services fearing attacks from Maoists. Even schools, shops and business establishments remained closed.

The experts' committee led by former DG of forests and secretary to the Government of India, JC Kala, landed in the port city on Tuesday.

They faced the wrath of the agitators at a star hotel where they checked into. Shouting 'go back, go back,' a large number of agitators carrying placards gathered outside the hotel. Their attempts to barge into the hotel were thwarted by the police.

When the agitators stopped district collector Luv Agarwal from entering the hotel to meet the committee member, he said the visit of the committee might not take place on Tuesday. He assured the agitators that he would convey their feelings to the committee chairman.
