Close associates and friends fondly remembered Gandhian social activist L.C. Jain at a prayer meeting held in his memory at the Gandhi Peace Foundation (GPC) here . The former High Commissioner and former Member of the Planning Commission passed away on Sunday after an illness.

Separately the Planning Commission passed a resolution at a condolence meeting chaired by Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia recalling Mr. Jain's extraordinary services to the nation. “He was one of the guiding forces of the Indian planning process, an ardent advocate of the need to focus on human concerns and the needs of the vulnerable and the marginalised. We in the Planning Commission have lost not just a former member but also someone whose life was an inspiration to all interested in public service.” The GPC, where the Magsaysay Award winner had led several public meetings for social causes, was jam-packed with people of all hues including those from academics, judiciary, politics, media, civil society and Gandhian, socialist and cooperative movements. Among the mourners were Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, Members of Parliament Karan Singh and Kapila Vatsyayan, Fali Nariman, Navin Chawla, Upendra Baxi, Rajinder Sachar, Surendra Mohan, Jaya Jaitley, B.G. Verghese, Sunita Narain, Laila Taiyabji and Gandhian Radhabehan. The Prime Minister was represented by his wife Gursharan Kaur. “Even from his bed in Mumbai he was worried about strengthening the han-dloom sector in Kashmir to create employment,” recalled GPC chairman Radhabehan.

Describing him as a “great warrior”, Sanjoy Hazarika said L.C. Jain was always seeking answers. “How can you have a vision without people's voices was his concern.” “In these days of corruption, he never did anything for personal gains,” said his friend of seven decades Sultan Singh Backliwal, while Ms. Narain lauded his “enormous sense of perseverance”. “He was a creative artist in search of peace and harmony who believed that freedom was a right to be exercised without causing injury to anyone,” remarked Mr Baxi. “The best tribute to him would be to pass on his faith and values to the next generation,” said Ms. Vatsyayan, a close friend.
