Trinamul, Citu in price protest race

The Trinamul Congress, an ally of the Congress-led UPA government, has decided to hit the streets from tomorrow to protest the rise in prices of petrol and other commodities.

The Trinamul announcement today came minutes after CPM labour arm Citu declared a three-hour state-wide public transport strike from 12 noon to 3pm tomorrow to protest the fuel price hike. A Citu protest rally will also be held in Esplanade at 1pm tomorrow.

“We have raised our voice against the hike in fuel prices and increasing cost of essential commodities in the past. We are with the people,” said Partha Chatterjee, leader of the Opposition in the Assembly.

Chatterjee, however, said Trinamul’s protest was against the state government’s “failure” to check the rising prices.

“The state government has done nothing to check hoarding of essential commodities. Our protest is directed at the state government,” said Chatterjee.

Speaking to reporters after paying homage to Netai firing victim Arati Mondal who died in SSKM Hospital today, Trinamul chief and railway minister Mamata Banerjee said she was kept in the dark about the fuel price hike announced yesterday. “We are in the government but we did not know about the (fuel) price rise,” she said.

Echoing Mamata, Trinamul MP Sudip Bandopadhyay said at Trinamul Bhavan: “We are never consulted whenever there is such a decision. Yesterday, Mamata Banerjee spoke at length to (Union finance minister) Pranab Mukherjee but she was not told about it,” said Bandopadhyay.

Trinamul has decided to hold protest marches across the state tomorrow and on Tuesday. A rally will be held in Metro Channel around 2pm tomorrow. Another protest march will be brought out against the Netai killings on January 19. But Trinamul leaders are well aware that every time the Centre raises the fuel price, it gives the CPM a chance to raise a hue and cry.

“We know the CPM will use the fuel price rise as a plank against us. We also have to face the people,” said a Trinamul leader.

Mamata concurred: “The CPM is amused whenever there is a hike in prices of petrol and diesel. The state government has imposed cess on petrol and diesel. Why don’t they reduce it so that people can get some relief? As the railway minister, I have not increased fares.”

State Citu president Shyamal Chakraborty, however, said Trinamul was also to blame for the fuel price hike.

“People are inconvenienced whenever there is a hike in petrol price. The Centre has not done anything to control petrol prices. Trinamul cannot absolve itself. They are partners of the government at the Centre and must share the responsibility,” said Chakraborty.
