Exactly a month after Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit, her government has allowed transportation of PDS rice to Tripura through her country.

The Bangladesh government has approved the use of Ashuganj port as well as the Ashuganj-Agartala road across the international border to transport the first consignment of 5,000 tonnes of rice in the next couple of weeks, which will save Food Corporation of India (FCI) a circuitous route through Assam and Meghalaya to move the consignment from mainland India. Once it works, Mizoram and Meghalaya would benefit too.

State Food and Civil Supply Commissioner and Secretary B K Roy said FCI had already initiated the formalities for shipping the consignment from Kolkata to Ashuganj port, following which the same would be transported by trucks to Agartala.

“This would save us both time and transportation cost, and once it becomes a regular feature, Tripura will not have to suffer when the highways and the Lumding-Badarpur rail link get cut off due to monsoon,” Roy said.

FCI has already floated tenders to select transporters.
