Two officials of the AMRI hospital were arrested Monday in connection with the Dec 9 fire at the medical centre, which claimed 94 lives, and sent to police custody till Jan 30 by a court.

"Pritha Banerjee (vice president-administration) and Sajid Hussain (security in- charge) have been ordered to police custody by the Alipore court till Jan 30. They were arrested from Alipore in the morning (Monday)," hospital's counsel Salim Rahman said.

Hussain, who was in charge of the security of the hospital premises located in south Kolkata's Dhakuria, might provide useful information as he was present at the time when the fire broke out, police said.

Hussain and Banerjee are the latest to be arrested. Seven directors and two of the management staff are already behind bars following the country's worst ever fire tragedy in a hospital.

The two management staffers and all the directors except R.S. Agarwal are currently lodged in Alipore Correctional Home. Agarwal continues to be admitted to the state run SSKM hospital following ill health since his arrest Dec 9.
