Villagers in Nuagaon, Gadakujang and Dhinkia have accused the United Action Committee (UAC) of helping the government acquire betelvines for the proposed Posco project.

Ranjan Swain of Nuagaon, said, "For five years, the betelvines were a stumbling block for Posco to acquire land for its Rs 52,000 crores project at Gadakujang, Dhinkia and Nuagaon gram panchayats. But now their movement against Posco is falling like ninepins and the authority has sped up land acquisition. Anadi Rout, president of UAC and other leaders of UAC have betrayed us."

"Earlier, Anadi told us not to hand over our betelvines to the government. But on Monday he kowtowed before the administration. As a result, authorities acquired my betelvines for Rs80,000 as compensation," said Narhari Samal, another native of Nuagaon.

Bhaskar Swain, sarpanch of Nuagaon and president of Bhitamati Surakhya Manch said, "Anadi Rout and his close relatives are the owners of 45 acres of land at the proposed steel plant. He is supporting the project as he would get huge money in lieu of the land. He cheated many villagers by allowing the authority to dismantle the betelvines. But we are determined not to allow the authority to acquire our lands."

President of Posco Pratirdhaka Sangram Samiti (PPSS) Abhaya Sahoo said, "The leaders of UAC are the agents of the state government and Posco. They betrayed the villagers. Many supporters of the UAC decided to support the PPSS as it is fighting against Posco."

Anadi Rout denied the allegations. "The UAC has not betrayed the villagers. We allowed the authority to acquire betelvines till May 30, as on that day we will discuss our 29-point demands with the revenue divisional commissioner in Cuttack. If the authority does not fulfil our demands, we will oppose land acquisition," said the president of the UAC.

"On Tuesday, we acquired betelvines of 36 farmers covering about five acres 30 decimals and paid Rs57 lakh to them. Many farmers are now ready to hand over their betelvines after the UAC decided on Monday to cooperate with the officials in land acquisition," said Muralidhar Swain, the block development officer (BDO) of Erasama.
