HYDERABAD: In what could be seen a possible reflection of an agrarian crisis, 2014 farmers -- 1211 in Telangana and 803 farmers in Andhra -- committed suicide in the undivided state in 2013.

The data provides a comprehensive analysis and break-up based on age, gender and districts on all farmers' suicides recorded last year.

Among districts, Mahbubnagar topped the list in Telangana with 287 deaths and in Andhra, this disgrace is shared by Anantapur with 293 deaths recorded last year.

The gender-wise break shows 1,554 men farmers committing suicides as against 560 suicides by women farmers in the undivided state last year.

Again, in age-wise category, the highest number of suicides was resorted to by farmers in the age group between 30 years to 44 years - the victims in this category total 773 in all in the undivided state.

This data dished out by Cyber Crimes (CID) of Telangana, was furnished this month to RTI activist B Kondala Reddy, a member of Rythu Swarjya Vedika, an umbrella group of voluntary organisations working on farmers' issues.

Explaining the reasons, RTI activist B Kondala Reddy blamed a host of factors like unseasonal rains, debt trap, delay in germination of seeds, high input costs to failure of borewells and poor availability of underground water.

"If statistics are an indication, the agrarian policy in the undivided AP state was faulty as it always kept reaching the 2000 suicide mark, year after year. Barring the 2007, farmer suicides crossed the 2000 mark in all the remaining years since 2004," said Kondala Reddy.

However, in case of Ananatapur and Mahbubnagar - the two districts topping the deaths in AP and Telangana - CPI AP Rythu Sangam president K Ramakrishna and TRS MLA from Mahbubnagar Ch Lakshma Reddy cited specific reasons for the high number of deaths.

In the predominantly groundnut growing Anantapur, CPI leader K Ramakrishna mainly singled out drastic fall of groundwater levels (the average always hovers around 20 metres depth) while in Mahbubnagar, TRS Zadcherla MLA Lakshma Reddy blamed lack of irrigation projects.

"Though the Krishna river runs for 360 kilometres in Mahbubnagar, the previous Congress government kept Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation project hanging pending for a long time," said Lakshma Reddy.

Meanwhile, Kapilavai Ravinder, BJP Telangana state human rights cell convenor, claimed that only a small percentage of families benefited from GO No 421, which was issued in 2004 by the then AP government to provide ex-gratia of Rs 1.5 lakh to the families of farmer suicide victims.
