About half of Delhi's police personnel are overweight and have high blood pressure or cholesterol, heart problems, diabetes, insomnia or weak eyesight, a health camp has found out.

Senior officers declined comment but their juniors, requesting anonymity, blamed overwork and stress.

An internal police report says that 48 per cent among the 2,000 who participated in the 19-day camp were overweight and had high cholesterol. Over a third - 34 per cent - had high blood pressure; 23 per cent suffered from diabetes, and 12 per cent had weak eyesight.

"We have a high-pressure job with no fixed timings; so we don't eat or sleep well. Our ailments are largely connected to our lifestyle," said a senior officer who has cholesterol and high blood pressure.

"We are severely short-staffed; so we have to work harder," he added.

The Union home ministry, which handles law and order in the capital, has sent proposals to the finance ministry to create nearly 5,000 police posts in Delhi, 1,950 of them for women.

"A policeman in Delhi works at least 10 hours a day. Sometimes, he works 36 hours or longer at a stretch on VIP duty or during emergencies," an officer said.

"He sometimes stays at the police station for days, unable to meet his family. His salary is not high and like other people, he worries about his family and children. All this leads to stress and related diseases."

During counselling at the camp, sources said, cops confessed to having trouble sleeping because of reasons such as financial and family worries, ill health and the stress of their job. Asked about their daily health regimen, most said they didn't have any.

In 2010, a health camp held across 11 police districts in Delhi had revealed that 48 per cent of personnel had high blood pressure. Ahead of the Commonwealth Games that year, the police had to take overweight and unfit cops off the 230 police control room vans and replace them with younger and fitter personnel.

Although fitness tests are mandatory during recruitment, most police forces in the country don't regularly assess the cops' health thereafter.

In contrast, the Victoria police in Australia require personnel to pass six-monthly tests. South African police must fit into the same size of uniform from recruitment to retirement. The North Wales police have introduced an annual fitness test for all operational staff.
