Madhya Pradesh Government today extended the tenure of the Union Carbide Toxic Gas Leak Probe Commission by an year, sources said.

The term of the committee, headed by Justice S L Kocchar, was to expire on February 25, they said.

The decision in this regard was taken by the state Cabinet at its meeting chaired by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

The Commission was constituted after a lot of hue and cry was made over the gas leak judgement delivered in year 2010, which awarded lesser punishment to the accused persons responsible for the world's worst tragedy caused by the leakage of lethal methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas from the Union Carbide plant on the intervening nights of December 2-3, 1984.

The committee was given the mandate to investigate the causes of the tragedy and the role of the then state government and other persons vis-a-vis accused persons.

Among other decisions taken by the cabinet are incorporation of Satna and Chhattarpur districts under ambitious Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification Scheme aimed at providing electricity to villages.

It also sanctioned 20 posts of Project Managers on contract basis for the Narmada Valley Development Authority (NVDA). The appointment on these posts will be done through the State's Professional Examination Board.
