UP farmers protest in Delhi over e-way land

Thousands of farmers from western Uttar Pradesh descended on the capital on Thursday and blocked all key roads leading to Parliament. They were protesting against the Mayawati government for carrying out land acquisition for the Yamuna Expressway project. Though traffic movement in central Delhi areas was affected for a few hours, the protest was peaceful and no untoward incident was reported.

Traffic movement was affected at Rajghat, Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, Barakhamba Road, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Janpath, Ranjit Singh Marg and Tolstoy Marg, but the situation did not go out of control since the protest rally finished well before the evening peak hour.

Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Ajit Singh, who was the convener of the protest, announced that the protest will not stop till their basic demand that Parliament bring out an amended Land Acquisition Act which is `acceptable' to farmers is agreed to. "If the government forcefully takes land from farmers or if even a single farmer dies in the process, the governments in Delhi and Lucknow will not be able to find any peace,'' Singh warned.

Lashing out at the UPA government, the leader said that while the Manmohan Singh-led government has liberalized all economic policies, it has kept the farmers "hostage''. "Why don't you give farmers the liberty to decide what he wants to do with the land he owns?'' Singh asked, adding that the government took the issue seriously only when Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi decided to bring it up with the Prime Minister on Wednesday.

"We have been demanding for amendments in the Land Acquisition Act for years. We took this up with the PM, but he never responded. However, as soon as `Rahul baba' talked to PM Manmohan Singh he announced that the Bill will be introduced in Parliament in the next session. Is he only Rahul Gandhi's Prime Minister?'' asked Singh.

While most farmers who turned up at the rally maintained that they will not agree to make any land deal with the state government, others demanded compensation that was at par with the market rate.

Farmers in UP have been agitating for higher compensation for their land about 2,500 hectares that is being acquired for the 203-km Yamuna Expressway by the UP government.

Though the protest was centred around UP's land acquisition plans, a host of leaders from other major political parties turned up at the rally. Singh announced that this was the beginning of an all- India uprising of farmers.

Lok Jan Shakti Party (LJP) leader Ram Vilas Paswan termed Mayawati a real estate agent who was trying her best to acquire as much wealth as she can. Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley said the government could hold an all-party meeting to pass the Act as it did in the case of Nuclear Liability Bill.

Leaders from the south M Thambi Durai of AIADMK and TDP MP from Andhra Pradesh Nama Nageswara Rao also extended their parties' support to the farmers. Pointing out that any level of compensation could never replace the permanent source of livelihood of farmers, CPI leader A B Bardhan demanded that the compensation should be sufficient for the coming many generations.
