He challenged 'socialist' Mulayam Singh Yadav, charging him with possessing disproportionate assets, contested elections against BJP stalwart Rajnath Singh and is now responsible for all the furore over the foodgrain scam. Vishwanath Chaturvedi, whose PIL became the basis for high court's December 3 order in the scam, is a compulsive litigant.

"I have filed some three dozen public interest litigations of diverse nature," he said here on Tuesday. Most of these cases are high profile. Asked to comment on this, Chaturvedi said, "this could be a coincidence. I do not pick and choose."

And where does the motivation come from? "I am an ordinary Indian who is grossly affected by corruption. My sole agenda is to stand up against this evil. Face of a poorest of the poor Indian motivates me to attack," he said. Born to an ayurvedic doctor based in the Congress stronghold, Rae Bareli, Chaturvedi has fond memories of his village in the Shivgarh block. A law graduate from Lucknow University, Chaturvedi depends on other lawyers to plead his cases.

The Rae Bareli connection and non-Congress victims find an obvious reason to see him as an agent of the Congress. Asked to comment, he said, "Like most natives of the area, my parents also liked Indira Gandhi and proudly call themselves Congressmen even now. I have a natural inclination towards the party's ideology, but I am not a member," he explained.

A father of three children, eldest being in Class-IX, Chaturvedi recalls the trauma he went through when he filed several cases against the former chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav. "Those times shook my confidence for a while as they tried all possible things to nail me down. But then I gathered myself again. Eventually, the more atrocious they became, the more adamant I turned," he said.

In an auxiliary statement, he clarified that he was not against Mulayam Singh as such. "I would go against any politician if I am convinced and have evidence," he says. Then what made you relocate to Delhi? "The future of my children. At one point of time I felt that they should not pay the price of my passion. So we packed our bags and are now living in the national capital," he said.

With regard to the foodgrain scam, Chaturvedi remarked, "I can see that this is a sandal possibly much bigger than the 2G spectrum scam. And I am happy that something is happening on this front. Actually, the poor Indian has slipped from the agenda of all political parties. They are used in elections and then left to destiny. I hope all Indians get justice."
