Dehradun: The Uttarakhand government on Saturday introduced a food security scheme on the pattern of the National Food Security Act

This was decided at the Cabinet meeting. The scheme will cater to the Below Poverty Line and Above Poverty Line families across the State.

According to the norms set by the Centre, the State was ineligible for the implementation of the Act. Chief Minister's media in charge Surendra Agarwal said: "The State did not have a fully digitised system to implement the National Food Security Act." The scheme would cost the State over Rs 350 crore.

Under the scheme, BPL families would get 35 kg of food grain per family per month, where wheat would cost Rs 4.15 per kg and rice Rs 5.65 per kg.

The APL families would be eligible for 15 kg food grain per family on a monthly basis. They would be able to procure wheat for Rs 5 per kg and rice for Rs 7 per kg.
