Uttarakhand rains: Death toll rises to 43 -Gaurav Talwar

DEHRADUN: At least 43 people lost their lives and 23 got injured so far in the natural disasters triggered by torrential rainfall in Uttarakhand during this year's monsoon season, which started from June 1. Besides, several heads of animals were also killed in the state since June this year along with considerable damage to property.

Since the onset of monsoon season in the state, 27 people have been killed in flash flood/cloudburst/heavy rainfall related incidents. Landslides triggered by heavy rains also took lives of 11 people and five people fell victim to the flood related incidents in the state in just last 48 days of monsoon period.

Also, 55 houses were fully damaged, while 136 suffered severe damage and about 613 structures got partially damage in the excess rains in Uttarakhand, according to data of disaster management department. About 435 small and 126 big animals have also been killed in the incidents of natural disaster.


"We can't say that the state has witnessed monsoon rains of unprecedented scale this year. Uttarakhand receives such heavy rain spells during almost every monsoon season. Most of the deaths this year are also due to carelessness shown by people. For instance, four people, who lost their after being hit by a landslide at Narendra Nagar, were warned by the authorities and even asked not proceed ahead," said Santosh Badoni, deputy secretary, disaster management department.

According to data released by Meteorological centre, vigorous rainfall, which is four times than normal, lashed the hill state on July 16, 17 and 18, resulting in the death of over 15 people in different rain related incidents.
