Calcutta University has decided to make available answer scripts to students under the Right to Information Act, university officials said on Monday.

“We have decided to give photo copies of answer scripts to students under the Act. Each student will have to pay Rs. 500 for getting his duplicate copy of answer scripts…,” Controller of Examinations Onkar Sadhan Adhikari said.

The decision of the university, which had earlier declined requests for showing answer scripts under the Act and mounted a legal challenge, comes after the Supreme Court's order passed in August that answer sheets of any examination conducted by any agency in the country be shown to students.

The answer scripts of the BA and BSc Part I examinations and those of any examination to be conducted by the university in future, will be made available.

Other agencies in West Bengal charge fees for making scripts available under the Act. While the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education shows answer scripts to students by charging Rs. 900, the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education collects Rs. 200.

The payment of such fees goes against the very essence of the Act, RTI activists have argued.
