Vegetable prices are on an upswing across the retail markets of Kolkata after untimely rainfall in the city caused damage to the standing crops.

Kolkata: Vegetable prices remained on the higher side across the retail markets of Kolkata on Friday after untimely rainfall in the city damaged the standing crops. With the constricted supply line due to recent untimely rain, a massive demand-supply gap can also be seen in the city.

According to a report published in the Times of India (TOI), West Bengal Vendors' Association president Kamal De said, “Since winter vegetables are highly weather-sensitive, they tend to rot in a flooded field.”

Markets are very likely to behave a bit abnormally because demand will exceed supply and unseasonal rains are to be blamed as such rainfall has not taken place in the past 40 years, he added.

As a result of unseasonal rainfall, a whole range of crops has been badly damaged, including brinjal, green chillies, cabbage, cauliflower, coriander leaves and green peas.

Almost all the vegetables have become costlier as the prices have increased by Rs 20-Rs 30 in just three days, adding to the woes of a common man. Moreover, they are expected to remain at elevated price levels in the coming days as well.
