MUMBAI: A glut of fresh produce has brought down vegetable prices all over the city. Prices of lady's finger and beans dropped to Rs 40 a kg from Rs 60 while that of cabbage dipped to Rs 20 from Rs 30 in the retail market.

The biggest drop is seen in the price of tomatoes, which now sell at Rs 18 a kg, down from last week's Rs 40.

Prices of some other essentials, including cauliflower, potato, green chilli and onion, have not reduced but not gone up either. In fact, price fluctuation in the wholesale market is not reflected on the same day in retail trade. That's because retailers rake in the moolah in the absence of a regulatory mechanism, unlike wholesale transactions.

Wholesale traders in the APMC market have a piece of advice for consumers — that they should bargain with retailers and vegetable vendors for the best price since the current supply is abundant compared with the demand in Mumbai market. Vashi APMC received 650 truckloads of vegetables on Wednesday, higher than the usual supply of 550-600 trucks.

"I have a retail shop in Dadar. With diminishing prices, almost all vegetables are sold, after adding genuine profit, at below Rs 40 per kg these days. Consumers should ask vendors for the authentic price as the new season is bringing in plenty of supply. Only quality has been a concern as heavy rain in some areas has damaged crops," said Balasaheb Bodle, a wholesale trader.

Both wholesale and retail prices of tomatoes have dipped to a record low with the arrival of surplus produce from Satara, Kolhapur, Pune and Narayangaon.

Bangalore tomatoes have more or less stopped hitting the Vashi market with rock bottom price due to local supply.

"Around 50 to 60 truckloads of tomatoes hit the wholesale market every day. With more supply and less demand, prices have dipped. Consumers are privileged as the cheaper price trend will continue for the next few weeks," said Rajesh Madan, a wholesaler.

On the flip side, onion prices have remained as high as Rs 50 a kg in the retail market, while the corresponding wholesale price is between Rs 35 and Rs 40.

"We have got a breather as cheaper tomatoes and other vegetables have flooded the market, but we are concerned about rising prices of the most important kitchen staple onion," said Meera Gupta, a homemaker.

Other vegetables are within the affordable range with a fresh monsoon crop coming in and being sold within the range of Rs 30 and 60 a kg in retail markets.

Even, prices of ginger and garlic are Rs 120 and Rs 150 a kg, respectively, which are slightly lower than in the previous month.
