More than 100 days after she had suffered spinal injuries during the police crackdown on Baba Ramdev's protest camp at Ramlila Ground in June this year, a 51-year-old supporter of the yoga guru died in hospital on Monday morning.

The victim, Rajbala, had been on ventilator support at the ICU of GB Pant Hospital. "The patient died of cardiac arrest. She had suffered fracture and dislocation of cervical C4 and C5 vertibrae and suffered cardiac arrest and could not be revived," a hospital report said.

Grieving family members blamed the Delhi Police for her death. "She died due to police lathicharge. Everybody knows why police took such action. We cannot get our mother back. At least the culprits should be punished," said her son Anil Kumar Malik.

Family members refused to claim her body after the postmortem, demanding that they be given a complete medical report of the three and a half months Rajbala had spent in the hospital. They alleged that GB Pant Hospital not been transparent about the patient's treatment and had not given them a single written medical report. The family had filed an RTI about a fortnight ago seeking a report on her condition.

The body was finally taken to the family's residence in Gurgaon in the evening, after the hospital gave an assurance that a full medical report would be provided on Tuesday.

Rajbala, an active social worker and a former councillor of ward 21 in Gurgaon, had trained to be a yoga teacher after watching Baba Ramdev's sessions on TV.

"We want the full medical report and summary of the medical treatment given to her. Earlier, the hospital gave all sorts of excuses and then finally told us to go ahead and file an RTI. This is extremely fishy. We have never wanted compensation and wanted to pay for her treatment at the best possible hospital," said Ravindra Chaudhry, Rajbala's nephew.

According to her family, Rajbala was being treated for spinal injuries and her condition was very critical from day one. She underwent a surgery and was on ventilator since her admission in the hospital and had become a quadriplegic. "She was critical from the day she was hospitalized. She should be given a national honour and the funeral should be done with due respect. My mother-in-law said she was beaten up by the police. Even in the MLC report, all her injuries were not reported. This is a conspiracy," said an angry and distraught Rakesh Malik, her daughter-in-law. The MLC report said: "Stampede at Ramlila Ground around 1am as told by B/B and patient. Neck pain, unable to move the upper and lower limbs."

The body would be taken for funeral on Tuesday to her village Bhutana near Sonipat. Baba Ramdev, on a padayatra in Uttar Pradesh, is expected to attend. "It is an irreparable loss to the whole organization, agitation and the nation. It is the ultimate sacrifice.... Her sacrifice will not go in vain and millions of her brothers and sisters will continue to fight for the cause for which she sacrificed (her life)," Ramdev said.

The Delhi government on Monday said it would explore ways to help the victim's family. "She was a resident of Haryana. We had provided her treatment. Health minister (A K Walia) will meet her family members and will see how we can help them," said chief minister Sheila Dikshit.

She parried a question on allegations by Ramdev and Rajbala's family that the police were responsible for her death.
