Villagers of Netai in Lalgarh could not conceal their grievance against the state administration when district police superintendent Monoj Verma and district magistrate Surendra Gupta reached the village on Sunday morning to supervise arrangements before governor M K Narayanan's visit on Wednesday.

Gupta and Verma arrived at the village, escorted by heavy security, around 11am. Gupta started visiting different portions of the village and found a tube well that was not working. He asked the villagers about their problem, enquired about their water resources and about their livelihood.

Villagers complained that they were not getting work under NREGA. Even the local panchayat was not functioning properly, some of them complained.

Both the officials visited the health sub-centre and assured the villagers of development.

The trouble broke out when they were about to leave. Hundreds of agitated villagers stopped them, demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits who had killed nine innocent villagers.

"We don't need development. First arrest the culprits and then come to the village," shouted out a villager. Villagers also expressed their resentment towards police and the state government. Even retired schoolteacher Krishna Gopal Roy, who was among the five-member team which went to meet the CPM cadres camping at Rathin Dandapat's house on January 7, told Verma: "You have mentioned about Maoists and PCPA in your report. You managed to find them out, but you and your police never took any initiative to stop these armed CPM cadres."

A visibly embarrassed Verma and Gupta tried to pacify the villagers. "We want a police camp in our village. Even days ago, during the cremation of Geetali Adak, another victim of the incident, police left the place without securing our protection. Soon after police left, CPM cadres started firing from the other bank of the river," alleged another villager.

Verma assured them of a police camp at the village. "We have marked a plot for the camp. After that, we will speak to the owners of the land and then, after completing the official process of compensation, the camp will be set up," said Gupta.

Meanwhile, a 10-member team of advocates, led by Sukhendu Sekhar Roy of the Calcutta High Court Bar Association arrived at the village. They spoke to the villagers and relatives of the victims. Their inquiry was more focused on how police allegedly delayed in reaching the spot despite getting information early.
