In spite of all the claims made by the State Election Commission (SEC) to ensure peaceful elections, violence marked the third phase of polling in the panchayat elections. Two persons died on Friday, taking the toll in panchayat poll-related violence to 26.

Two others, meanwhile, died after consuming liquor allegedly distributed by a candidate for the post of pradhan in Bijnor district’s Nahtaur.

The State Election Commission said by 6 pm nearly 70 per cent polling was reported and the figure may go up to 72 per cent as polling was still on at several booths.

Additional State Election Commissioner J P Singh said irregularities like pouring of water in the ballot boxes and snatching of ballot boxes have been reported from 18 districts but added that overall the third phase was more peaceful as compared to two other phases. In booths, where the SEC has received complaints of irregularities, it has asked the district magistrates to submit their reports. A decision on re poll will be likely taken after we receive the reports from the DMs, said Singh.

ADG (Law & Order) Brij Lal, meanwhile, said that 19 incidents of violence, including clashes between supporters of candidates, damaging of ballot boxes and papers were reported from across the state.

Two persons have been killed and 21 others have been injured in the violence, he said, and added that police have arrested 34 troublemakers.

The districts where violence disrupted the polling included Meerut, Pratapgarh, Deoria, Agra, Ferozabad and Sultanpur. In Sant Kabir Nagar district, supporters of two women candidates — Sandhya Tripathi and Afsana who are contesting for the post of pradhan — clashed as they accused each other of indulging in bogus voting at Mahathan village in Khalilabad police station area. Initially they exchanged brickbats, but later one of the groups opened fire causing the death of one person.

Superintendent of Police (Sant Kabir Nagar) Manoj Kumar said Afsana’s nephew Guddu allegedly fired at Sandhya’s nephew Krishna Tripathi (32) from point blank range. The bullet hit Krishna’s stomach and he was taken to a a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Acting on the FIR lodged against Afsana’s husband, Alam, and his associates, the police arrested four of his family members who have been identified as Nizamu, Ikhlaq, Iqbal and Guddu. Sandhya’s brother, J S Tripathi, alleged that Alam and his family attacked their supporters while they were distributing voter slips. The police force did not intervene even when Alam’s nephew fired at Krishna, he added.

In Ghazipur district, a former pradhan of Awahipur village panchayat was beaten to death by his rival group outside a polling booth in Jamania police station area.

Vashisht Singh (65), who was supporting Ram Dulare Yadav, had an altercation with the supporters of his rival Surya Narayan. Narayan’s supporters attacked Singh with sticks and he died in the hospital, said SHO Yogendra Prasad Shukla. The accused are yet to be arrested, Shukla added.

In Bijnor district, where two persons died after consuming liquor, the locals have failed to identify the candidate who allegedly distributed it. Two others, who also fell ill after consuming the liquor, have been hospitalised.

Govt promoting organised violence: BJP

The BJP has alleged that the state government is promoting organised violence in the panchayat elections. Party state spokesperson Rajendra

Tiwari said three rounds of polls have witnessed a largescale violence and the State Election Commission (SEC) has turned a blind eye to such incidents. He demanded that SEC should give details as to what action has been taken in case of incidents of violence reported during the first two phases.
