Exasperated with the government’s attempt to pack in retired bureaucrats as information commissioners, civil society has decided to take matters into its own hands. ‘Apply to be an information commissioner’ is a campaign they have launched to stir people to action and put pressure on the government to considering non-bureaucrats for the job.

The campaign — mainly spreading through online RTI forums and by word-of-mouth — took off a month ago but the provocation was the current chief information commissioner Wajahat Habibullah’s announcement in 2009 that he wanted to quit to serve with the J&K state information commission. ‘‘The process of selecting his successor was so opaque...we felt that someone close to the administration would be chosen,’’ Krishnaraj Rao, Mumbai RTI activist said.

Thus was born the idea of getting academics, social workers, legal eagles or anyone else interested in promoting the implementation of the RTI Act to apply for the job.
