After taking the historic step of putting details of their assets and liabilities on the Supreme Court’s official website, some of the judges had to scurry for cover in the face of looming threat from cyber criminals and had to change their bank account numbers.

Speaking at a national consultative meeting on launching of cyber law enforcement programme on Sunday, Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan said, "We had put on the official website details of the assets and liabilities. But some judges had given details of their bank accounts, including the numbers."

He added, "I got a letter from a cyber expert asking how the judges could be so naive to give details of their bank accounts on website. The expert warned that a cyber criminal could easily hack into their accounts and wipe off their savings. The judges had to immediately change their bank account numbers." The details were later removed from the website.

The judges had posted their assets and liabilities on Supreme Court’s official website on November 2 last year. Among the judges who posted bank account numbers were Justice Tarun Chatterjee (since retired), who gave the number of his SBI account in Narkeddanga branch and also the NSS account number in Dharamtala post office in Kolkata; Justice R Raveendran, who provided details of his fixed deposit account numbers in Federal Bank’s Basavangudi branch, Bangalore; Justice Sudershan Reddy, who provided the loan account number in UCO Bank, Supreme Court, with details; and Justice P Sathasivam, who gave details of the money and account numbers of his fixed deposits with UCO Bank in Supreme Court as well as his GPF account number.
