Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Thursday said he would lead an all-party delegation to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on January 13 to exert pressure for the clearance of the Kalasa-Banduri drinking water project, envisaged to meet the drinking water needs of Hubli-Dharwad and surrounding areas.

Speaking to presspersons here, the Chief Minister said he had discussed the decision of the Union Government to set up a tribunal to settle the decade-old Mahadayi water dispute with neighbouring Goa, with floor leaders of the Opposition in the Legislature at a meeting here on Thursday. The Chief Minister said that during the meeting it was decided unanimously to meet the Prime Minister and convince him of the need to complete the Kalasa-Banduri drinking water project.

Mr. Yeddyurappa said the Union Water Resources Ministry had approved the State Government’s proposal on Kalasa-Banduri project and had issued in-principle clearance. However, the Centre withheld it following protests from the Goa Government. Goa has also approached the Supreme Court on the issue.

The Chief Minister said the Supreme Court had, in its order in 2007, passed a judgment against the Goa Government’s petition saying that the Centre should rescind its decision to suspend the in-principle clearance as Karnataka’s project was related to drinking water.
