Water shortage worries farmers

Most farmers are worrying over the sudden shortage of water supply to the paddy crop which is currently being grown over 10 lakh acres in the Godavari districts, which accounts for the bulk of the rice procured in the state by the Food Corporation of India (FCI). Some farmers even staged a protest against water scarcity in West Godavari on Sunday. Farmers’ leaders alleged that shortage of water mostly affected tail-end fields, and this was admitted by official sources from Agriculture and Irrigation departments.

A senior Irrigation official stated that there were no favourable Godavari inflows as against the estimation of over 50 thousand million cubic feet (TMC ft) during the rabi despite heavy rains that lashed the districts in the end of the kharif. Generally, one TMC ft of water can irrigate nearly 10,000 acres of paddy, and nearly 100 TMC ft is required to irrigate the total crop for the complete rabi season.

The general secretary of the AP Rythu Koolie Sangham for East Godavari, Mr G. Appa Rao, said that if the district administrations fail to take alternative steps, the crop, this rabi, would fail. He appealed to the collectors to look into the matter and conduct an emergency meeting for a solution by the month-end.

The president of the AP State Tenant Farmers’ Association, Mr B. Balaram, told this correspondent that the situation was very critical in the tail-end, upland and Agency areas of the Godavari districts.

Lack of regular check-ups by officials, unscheduled power cuts by the Eastern Power Distribution authorities, and rise in temperatures were the prime reasons for shortage of water supply to the flowering period of the rabi crop, the harvest of which will begin on the second week of April. There were also plans to hold a series of protests, Mr Balaram revealed.
