10-member delegation meets Pratibha to garner support for Women's Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha

Passing of the Bill will be a “historic step”

‘Women should get 50 per cent reservation'

Demanding passage of the Women's Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha, a large number of women from across the country took out a rally at Jantar Mantar here on Thursday to demand their “right”.

While the rally gathered support for the Bill, a 10-member delegation representing 350 women's organisations and civil society groups from across India met President Pratibha Patil and appealed to get the Bill passed in monsoon session of Parliament. The delegates said passing of the Bill by Lok Sabha would be a “historic step”, more so, because it would become a law under the “country's first woman President”.

The President said: “I am with you as my speech to Parliament indicated. Women's reservation is good for the country." The delegates also presented her with a special cap and umbrella as a symbol of the demands of the rally.

Addressing the rally, film actor Sharmila Tagore said: “Yes the Bill is a unique step to take the women forward. It is a shameful thing that there are only 69 women in Parliament against 537 men… I am with you all in demanding 33 per cent of reservation for women. This decade is meant for women.”

Congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan said: “I assure you on behalf of my party that our efforts are there to pass the Women's Reservation Bill.”

Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat said: “…It is not the question of men and women but the entire country. Women are resource of the country. They are doing injustice to the country by not recognising them.”

Communist Party of India secretary D. Raja hoped that the UPA Government will take the Bill to the Lok Sabha and pass it. “As an MP I saw what happened in Parliament. I demand that the Bill be passed. In fact women should get 50 per cent reservation.”

Armed with the slogan “We are not begging, we are demanding our rights”, the rally saw the participation of film actor Shabana Azmi, National Federation of Indian Women general secretary Annie Raja, women activists and representatives of NGOs and gram panchayats.
