KOLKATA | GUWAHATI: West Bengal and Assam have failed to avail funds under Bringing Green Revolution to the Eastern India (BGREI) for FY13. In the Union Budget 2012-13, the Centre has allotted Rs 1,000 crore for seven states in the eastern region under the BGREI scheme.

While West Bengal has failed to send the statement of expenditure to avail the BGREI fund, Assam, on the other hand, has taken the decision to avail it during the summer paddy cultivation. The seven eastern states that fall under the BGREI are West Bengal, Assam, Odisha, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and UP(East). "All the eastern stares excluding West Bengal and Assam have availed the BGREI fund," said Trilochon Mohapatro, director of Central Rice Research Institute, which is monitoring the implementation of the BGREI scheme in the eastern states.

The BGREI was launched in 2010-11 with an initial corpus of Rs 400 crore but eventually the scheme size was increased to Rs 1,000 crore in the Union Budget 2012-13. It has resulted in a robust increase in foodgrains production in the eastern region. Rice production from the region had gone up to 562.6 lakh tonne in 2011-12, an increase of 19.8% over the last year. A senior official from the West Bengal agriculture department told ET: "We are working on a war footing and all reports are being collected from all the districts. We will shortly send the statement of expenditure to the ministry for availing the BGREI fund."

Buoyed by the success of the scheme so far, most of the states are expanding the cultivation areas. Bengal, for instance, had 67,000 hectares in 16 districts under the project last year. "But this year, we are covering nearly 2,00,000 hectares," the official added.
