Mamata Banerjee today questioned the “hue and cry outside Parliament” over Anna Hazare’s demand for a strong Lokpal bill and warned against making it a “one-point” issue, breaking her silence on the countrywide anti-corruption protests.

“Many persons have been giving their views and they have the right to do so. But I must also ask that when the issue is yet to be discussed in Parliament, why should there be so much hue and cry outside?” the chief minister said when asked about Hazare’s agitation.

The comments by Mamata, whose Trinamul Congress is the second-largest constituent of the UPA, came two days after she turned the spotlight on complaints that people claiming to be her party’s supporters were targeting industrialists for extortion and asked them not to pay up.

The chief minister also cautioned against the notion that Lokpal was a panacea for all corruption-related problems.

“If a one-point issue is taken up, nothing will happen. Instead, multiple reforms have to be pursued. The sectors where corruption originates require reforms,” she told reporters at the newly set up press corner on the Assembly premises this afternoon.

The chief minister asserted that she and her party were against corruption but argued that the problem was systemic rather than personal.

“We are against corruption. Our Prime Minister personally is not corrupt. He is an honest man. So are all former Prime Ministers like Atal Bihari Vajpayee, I.K. Gujral and the late Rajiv Gandhi. But I feel the system needs to be improved.”

Asked further if her party backed Hazare’s movement, Mamata chose to side-step the query. “What is needed is a comprehensive method to reform the system”. She said all parties would give their opinions when the Lokpal bill was debated in Parliament. “We (Trinamul) will also give our opinion then.”

Judicial, administrative and electoral reforms are necessary to fight graft, as is the need to recover black money and stop misuse of government funds, she said. “I want black money to be brought back to our country. ”
