The state is experimenting with tea and coffee plantation as part of its attempt to diversify crop

Has Chhattisgarh woken up to smell the coffee? For long a preserve of the south, coffee cultivation seems to be traveling north. Things started brewing after a few enterprising farmer entrepreneurs started coffee and tea plantations in the state. The Jashpur district in North Chhattisgarh has a coffee plantation; another was set up on 20 acres in Darbha in Bastar in 2017. Tea is grown at an ashram in Surguja and on 20 acres in Sarudih in Jashpur. Chhattisgarh, which has been seeking to diversify agricultural production in the state, smelt an opportunity. On October 17, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel announced the setting up of the Chhattisgarh Tea Coffee Board.

Currently, paddy is Chhattisgarh’s principal crop, earning the state the title of the rice bowl of India. The crop is cultivated in about 25-30 lakh hectares in the state, or about half the net sown area. The acreage for paddy has, in fact, gone up in recent years--from 20 lakh ha in 2014-15 to 27 lakh ha in 2020-21.

Ironically, the reason for the increase in paddy area and production has also become the motive for the state to promote the cultivation of other crops. Chhattisgarh pays farmers the highest price among all states to procure paddy--Rs 600 per quintal as bonus, though it steadfastly refuses to call it that--over and above the MSP (minimum support price) announced by the Centre. This has led to increased paddy production and procurement in the state. In the 2018-19 season, some 8 million tonnes of paddy was procured; this went up to 8.3 mt in 2019-20, and 9.2 mt a year later. The percentage of farmers selling their paddy to the government vis-a-vis the open market has also increased from 92.6 per cent in 2018-19, to 94.02 per cent in 2019-20, to 95.4 per cent in 2020-21, making Chhattisgarh the second-largest procurer of paddy among all states. In terms of rice production, however, the state is the seventh largest in the country, with West Bengal being the top producer.
