Reacting to the bandh in West Bengal called on Friday by various trade unions in support of a demand for wage revision of tea garden workers, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declared that she would ban general strikes in the state by enacting a law.

Banerjee reacted sharply to the strike that caused major disruptions in public life in Jalpaiguri, Terai and Dooars region. “In the name of bandh, hooliganism is going on there. I will not allow this. I have taken a vow that while we ourselves will not indulge in bandhs and strikes, we will not allow others to do this. I will enact a law to enforce this. There are a few things which are spontaneous, but you cannot call bandhs at your will,’’ Banerjee said.

Two days ago at a function at Rajdanga Stadium at Kasba, Banerjee had said that she was opposed to bandhs and rallies and appealed to all the political parties not to indulge in these things.

“She is sounding like an autocratic ruler. Our party was never in favour of bandhs and strikes on the slightest provocation. Bandhs are the last weapon of politicians. It should not be misused. But at the same time you cannot ban it. And if you do that, what will you do when you are in the Opposition. But I am sure she will not be able to do all these things,’’ Surya Kanta Mishra, leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly told The Indian Express.

Incentive revised for surrendered Maoists

On the eve of the Independence Day, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while giving a fresh call to Maoists to join the mainstream, also announced a revised package for those who surrender.

As per the rehabilitation package for Maoists announced by the Centre and followed by the previous Left Front government, the ultras who surrender are eligible for a stipend of Rs 2,000 for a maximum period of three years, and a sum of Rs 1.5 lakh is to be kept in the bank as a fixed deposit for a period of three years after which the beneficiary can withdraw it. Now, the new state government has revised the sum of money to be given as an incentive to the ultras to surrender their weapons.

With this, while for surrender of a AK47/56/74 rifle, the ultra will get Rs 1,00,000 instead of Rs 15,000, for an LMG or similar kind of weapon, he will get Rs 2,00,000 per weapon instead of the present Rs 25,000. “We appeal to the Maoists to come to us and join in the development work. They are our brothers and sisters and we will take care of them,’’ Banerjee said.
